MIAMI, April 16 (UPI) -- Former Norfolk State head basketball Coach Anthony Evans Tuesday was named to a similar position with Florida International University.

He replaces Richard Pitino, who left to accept the head coaching job at the University of Minnesota.

Evans compiled a 99-94 record over six seasons at Norfolk State, leading the Spartans last season to a 21-12 record and a 16-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season mark.

Norfolk State missed an NCAA Tournament berth after falling to Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Tournament semifinals.

Evans did, however, guide the Spartans to a second-round upset of second-seeded Missouri in the 2012 NCAA event.
