INDIANAPOLIS, April 1 (UPI) -- Louisville reserve guard Kevin Ware had his severely broken right leg successfully repaired at an Indianapolis hospital Sunday night, the school said.

Doctors at Methodist Hospital re-set the bone, closed the wound from the injury and inserted a rod in Ware's right tibia during about 2 hours of surgery, the university said in a release on its website.

Ware suffered the injury with 6:33 remaining in the first half of the Cardinals' 85-63 Midwest Regional Championship victory over Duke when he landed awkwardly while defending an outside shot.

The school said Ware will remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday, when he is hopeful to return to Louisville before joining his teammates, who will play in the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.

The 6-foot-4 sophomore had three points and a steal before getting injured.

This season, he averaged 4.5 points and more than 16 minutes a game for the Cardinals. He scored a career-high 11 points against Oregon Friday in the regional semifinals.

No timetable has been set for Ware's return to competitive basketball.
