AKRON, Ohio, March 8 (UPI) -- Point guard Alex Abreu was suspended from the Akron Zips after police said he was arrested on drug charges Thursday.
Akron police said narcotics unit detectives arrested the 21-year-old junior and Austin L. Durgala, 18, of Akron for allegedly trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported. Police said investigators found more than 5 pounds of marijuana at Durgala's home, the newspaper said.
The pair were jailed pending arraignment and Abreu was suspended from the team pending the outcome of the investigation.
Akron Coach Keith Dambrot had no comment on the matter Thursday night, The Plain Dealer said.
"I can't talk. I can't talk," he said.
Abreu, the team's floor leader, averaged 10.3 points, 6.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 29 games and the Zips (24-5) won their second straight Mid-American Conference regular-season title Tuesday. The Zips dropped out of the USA Today Coaches poll this week after being ranked No. 24 the previous week.
