COL BKB: Michigan State 81, Penn State 72

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Adreian Payne scored 20 points off the bench Wednesday and helped No. 17 Michigan State pull away in the second half for an 81-72 triumph over Penn State.

The Spartans had only a one-point advantage with 14 minutes to go, but outscored Penn State over the next 5 minutes 17-8.

Five players scored in double figures for Michigan State (15-3, 4-1 Big Ten Conference) with Gary Harris producing 14 and both Derrick Nix and Keith Appling contributing 12.

Jermaine Marshall and D.J. Newbill delivered all but 16 of Penn State's points. Marshall had 29 to go with 10 rebounds and Newbill scored 27. The Nittany Lions slipped to 8-9 and are winless in five conference games.
