SYRACUSE, N.Y., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- James Southerland netted 22 points Monday and third-ranked Syracuse got past Detroit 72-68, giving Orange Coach Jim Boeheim his 900th career win.

Southerland drained five 3-pointers and Michael Carter-Williams added 12 points and 10 assists for Syracuse (10-0), which nearly blew a 22-point, second-half lead but held on down the stretch to close out the victory.

Boeheim joins a club of 900-game winners that now includes only himself, Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.

Detroit (6-5) lost despite 18 points apiece from Juwan Howard Jr. and Doug Anderson.
