Krzyzewski opposes NCAA realignments

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski said he objects to the current trend of conference realignment at the expense of decades of college tradition.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, which includes Duke, added Louisville last week to replace Maryland, which will join the Big 10. Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse have jumped to the ACC in the past 16 months.

"I hate the fact that we get rid of, in our own conference with Maryland leaving, 60 years of tradition based on a decision right now, because you think you're going to make more money in a certain situation. You give up what really makes college athletics, which is the tradition," Krzyzewski told CBS Sports Thursday.

The winner of four NCAA championships as Duke coach for 33 years also said he does not see an end to the trend.

"I think it's a long way from ending. [Traditions] are priceless and I hate that we're not looking at those things close enough as we look into the future of college athletics," Krzyzewski said.
