UConn's Calhoun breaks hip in bike mishap

UNCASVILLE, Conn., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- University of Connecticut men's basketball Coach Jim Calhoun was set for surgery Saturday after breaking his hip in a cycling accident, school officials said.

An issued statement indicated Calhoun would undergo the procedure Saturday night at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, The Hartford Courant reported.

School officials said Calhoun took a tumble while cycling near his summer home in Madison, Conn., losing control of his bicycle in some sand.

The accident forced the 70-year-old coach to miss his all-star charity game at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Calhoun, an avid cyclist, broke five ribs during a 2000 charity ride.
