CHAPEL HILL, N.C., May 9 (UPI) -- University of North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams says players who took courses that are being investigated did all the work assigned to them. The university is examining 54 courses offered by the department of African and Afro-American Studies, The Raleigh News & Observer reported. An internal investigation found that some teachers did not show up, others did not teach and grades were changed without authorization.

About 40 percent of the students enrolled in the classes were athletes, including 246 football players and 23 basketball players. There was no evidence, however, of a conspiracy to maintain the athletes' academic eligibility, the university said.
"The players were eligible to be enrolled in those classes, as were non-student-athletes, and they did the work that was assigned to them," Williams said in a statement Tuesday.
The university sent its internal report to the NCAA and has received no reply, a spokesman said.
