Va. Tech fires basketball Coach Seth Greenberg

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 23 (UPI) -- Virginia Tech Monday fired men's basketball Coach Seth Greenberg, who led the team for nine seasons.

The move was announced in a five-paragraph release from the school. Virginia Tech Athletics Director Jim Weaver thanked Greenberg "for his decision and effort in leading Virginia Tech in the early years of ACC membership."

The Hokies joined the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2004-05 season, Greenberg's second at the school. Virginia Tech has never finished higher than a tie for third and won an invitation to the NCAA Tournament just once in that period.

Virginia Tech was 170-123 overall under Greenberg but 66-71 in conference games.

Greenberg has been a college head coach for 22 seasons. Prior to taking over at Virginia Tech, he coached at Long Beach State from 1990-96 and South Florida from 1996-2003. His overall record is 383-293.

The Virginia Tech release said a search for a replacement for Greenberg would begin immediately.
