COL BKB: Purdue 72, St. Mary's (Calif.) 69

OMAHA, March 17 (UPI) -- Lewis Jackson and Robbie Hummel teamed for four foul shots in the last 23 seconds Friday, lifting Purdue to a 72-69 win over St. Mary's in the NCAA Tournament.

The Boilermakers survived a late rally by the Gaels and became one of a series of lower-seeded teams to advance on a day of upsets.

Purdue is seeded 10th in the Midwest Region and moved on for a Sunday game against second-seeded Kansas, which overcame a slow start to defeat Detroit Friday.

St. Mary's came from 13 points behind in the second half to take a 69-68 lead with 45 seconds to play on a 3-pointer by Jorden Page. Purdue then turned the ball over but St. Mary's Clint Steindl was called for traveling to prevent the Gaels from expanding their lead.

Jackson followed by hitting two free throws with 23 seconds left to put Purdue back in front and, after Page missed a 3-pointer, Hummel made two from the line for a three-point advantage.

Rob Jones missed a 3-point attempt that would have sent the game into overtime.

Terone Johnson led Purdue (22-12) with 21 points and Jackson had 18.

St. Mary's, which won both the regular-season title and the tournament championship in the West Coast Conference, made only 4-of-25 shots from 3-point range. Jones scored 23 points for the Gaels (27-6).
