Murray State outscored the Rams (20-12) 18-2 over the first 9 1/2 minutes of the second half and cruised to its eighth consecutive win.
The sixth-seeded Racers (31-1) advanced to the third-round West Region game Saturday against No. 3-seeded Marquette. The Golden Eagles earned their third-round slot with an 88-68 win over No. 14 Brigham Young.
Colorado State led 24-23 at the half but hit just one of its first nine shots in the second period.
Canaan had four points in the half and Murray State was up 30-23 before Colorado State scored in the period. Dante Poole then capped an 11-0 run before the Rams got on the board again. Poole's shot put the Racers up 41-26 with 11:27 to go. It was 2 more minutes before Colorado State managed another point.
Canaan's 15 points led all scorers while Poole added 13.
Colorado State, which hurt itself with 22 turnovers and 33.3 percent shooting, got 12 points and 17 rebounds from Pierce Hornung.
