WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Hollis Thompson keyed a run late in the first half Wednesday that sent No. 14 Georgetown to a rugged 58-44 victory over Connecticut.
The longtime Big East rivals battled through a typically physical defensive struggle in which they combined to make only 39 field goals in 40 minutes of action.
Georgetown had a one-point lead with 6:30 to go in the opening period and then closed the half on a 13-4 run. Thompson scored seven of his 18 points during that stretch and the Hoyas' lead dwindled to no fewer than six points during the final 20 minutes.
The Hoyas won for the fourth time in five games. Henry Sims added 13 points and Jason Clark had 11 for Georgetown (17-4, 7-3 Big East Conference), which is alone in third in the league race two games behind Syracuse.
Andre Drummond had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies (14-7, 4-5). Connecticut made just 29 percent of its attempts from the field and was 2-of-21 from 3-point range in losing its fourth straight.
