CHARLESTON, S.C., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- College of Charleston's Bobby Cremins, among the top 15 active coaches in career victories, announced Friday he was taking a medical leave of absence.

Cremins, former coach at Georgia Tech, and in his sixth season with College of Charleston, will be replaced on an interim basis by assistant Mark Byington. Cremins has a career record of 579-375 in 31 seasons as a head coach in major college basketball.

"Being able to come back and coach at the College of Charleston has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Cremins said in a statement. "I hope everybody will continue to support our team and Mark."

"Given how much Bobby loves coaching and how committed he is to his players, his coaching staff, and the college, I know this was a very difficult decision for him," school president George Benson said. "He must do what's best for his health."

School officials did not specify Cremins' health concerns.

College of Charleston has a 12-8 record this year and is 4-5 in Southern Conference action. The Cougars will host Wofford Saturday.
