Canada body-parts murder victim identified
INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The Oklahoma men's basketball program was placed on NCAA probation for three years and faces scholarship and recruiting reductions for major rules violations.
The NCAA said Friday its investigation revolved around one student-athlete who received extra benefits and preferential treatment while ineligible to play.
Also, former assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro was found to have failed to disclose the situation and acted unethically.
The probation period runs until Nov. 9, 2014, but doesn't include a ban on post-season appearances. The school was fined $15,000, had its number of scholarships lowered by one, had its number of official visits cut by two and recruiting days reduced by 30 for the current academic year.
The Sooners were ordered to vacate 13 wins in the 2009-10 season.
Oklahoma admitted to two major rules violations in July. The basketball program was already under probation for violations during the tenure of Coach Kelvin Sampson and could have been handed much more serious sanctions.
The NCAA said a financial adviser gave $3,000 to the mother of an athlete, before he enrolled at Oklahoma, to settle a debt with his high school to allow his transcript to be released.
