The 29-year-old wont first place with a total time of 2:45.29 seconds. He was joined on the podium by Fench skiers Steve Missilier and Alexis Pinturault, who finished 0.48 seconds and 0.64 seconds after him, respectively.
"To be able to win today when I knew I had a very good chance, that's an awesome feeling," Ligety said. "The pressure for me in giant slalom is bigger actually because it's my best chance at winning a medal … but I've learned a lot about dealing with that kind of pressure."
Ligety was a gold medalist in the combined giant slalom during the 2006 Torino games, he's also a four-time World Cup champion in the event.
