SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The Russians are out of the Men's Ice Hockey event in the Sochi Olympics.

The host team lost to Finland 1-3 during the quarterfinals Wednesday, prompting the Finns to move forward to play in the semifinals against Sweden later this week.

The loss comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin shamed the Russian hockey team and referees for disallowing a goal that led to a U.S. win during Saturday's game.

While Finland has never won the gold in Olympic hockey, it is the only country to have won three medals in the men's event since 1998.

The Men's Ice Hockey semifinals will take place Friday.
