SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- USA hockey General Manager David Poile will not be attending the Winter Olympics after being struck by a hockey puck during a Nashville Predators morning skate on Thursday.

Poile has had two surgeries to repair his fractured eye socket but Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA said, "It’s just not advisable for him to come to Sochi with everything he still has to deal with."

Assistant GM Ray Shero said that while he will handle all duties in Sochi, Poile will be involved in decision making from home while he recovers. "From David's situation," Shero said, "difficult news for me having worked for David for eight years in Nashville and knowing as I told the team today how much passion, time and effort he has putting this team together."
