Yankees call A-Rod's behavior 'bizarre'

Alex Rodriguez, who has yet to take the field for the Yankees this season, got over-excited when his doctor told him he could soon began playing rehab baseball games.

At least that was his explanation for his tweet that he had received a "green light" from his doctor to play.

Dr. Bryan Kelly had been approved by the Yankees to perform a repair in Rodriguez's right hip and the immediate recovery, but not oversee his rehab.

The Yankees' General Manager Brian Cashman was furious with Rodriguez's tweet, which seemingly came out of nowhere -- no meeting with the team doctor had been scheduled, and the team's timetable for his return is much more vague.

"You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will," Cashman said. "Alex should just shut the [expletive] up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."

Cashman later said he regretted his choice of words.

But a team insider isn't so sure, calling Rodriguez's claims "bizarre."

“He’s not ready for [rehab games], that’s all there is to it,” a team official said.

On Monday, before Rodriguez's tweet, Cashman had denied a report similar to Rodriguez's claim he had been cleared to play.

"He has not been cleared by our doctors to play in rehab games yet," Cashman said. "He's getting closer. There's no doubt about it. But we don't have a date for him to start playing games yet. It could be July 1. It could also be July 5 or maybe June 25."

The relationship between the injured slugger and the Yankees' front office has been strained this season, stemming from the accusations that Rodriguez was involved in a performance-enhancing drug scandal surrounding Biogenesis lab head Anthony Bosch, which could lead to a 100-game ban.
