On Thursday, Hernandez was named as a suspect in a 2012 double-murder case in downtown Boston. Boston Police responded July 16, 2012 to the corner of Shawmut Avenue and Herald Street at 2 a.m., where they found three men had been shot -- two fatally -- in their car at a traffic light.
The men were leaving a bar at the time they were killed. The two killed, Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu, were in the front seat when an SUV with Rhode Island plates opened fire. The surviving third passenger was in the back seat.
Hernandez was charged Wednesday with the murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-professional football player. Hernandez was first linked to the homicide when police discovered a car connected to the case -- also an SUV with Rhode Island plates -- rented in Hernandez's name.
Police searched Hernandez's house and the area around it several times, each time leaving with a cardboard box. Detectives later determined that Hernandez had destroyed his cell phone and home security system, and that part of the tape near the time of the murder was missing.
An arrest warrant for obstruction of justice was written up but not issued. Wednesday morning, plainclothes police arrived at Hernandez's house and arrested him without struggle. His charges were not announced until a hearing Wednesday afternoon in Attleboro, Mass., district court. Hernandez is charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd and five counts of gun possession. He is pleading not guilty.
Hernandez was denied bail and is being held until his trial date.
