June 17 (UPI) -- U.S. Open winner Justin Rose, who overcame rain, a tough course, and a strong challenge from ultimate runner-up Phil Mickelson, will walk away with nearly $1.5 million in prize money.

The first-time champion shot an even-par 70 for the final round Sunday, beating Mickelson by one stroke in a tournament that saw PGA veterans and newcomers struggle to tackle difficult course conditions.

Mickelson, whose second-place finish was the sixth time the 43-year-old came up just short of victory at the Open, walked away with a $700,000 prize.

The total prizes totaled $7,846,000:
