Clemson University's iconic Howard's Rock was vandalized earlier this month and police are investigating the incident, the school announced Wednesday.

According to the press release a small portion of the Rock was broken off its pedestal after looters destroyed the case that protects the object.

"We take vandalism, especially of such an important part of our history, very seriously," said Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich. "Police are investigating."

It is tradition for Clemson's football players to rub the Rock before entering the team's Memorial Stadium before each game.
