Terrell Owens says he 'can still play,' blames 'politics' on lack of offers

June 12 (UPI) -- "I know I can still play the game and it's a matter of somebody just giving me the opportunity to go out there and play," the 39-year-old former NFL wide receiver told "NFL AM" on the NFL Network on Wednesday.

Owens, who was dropped by the Seattle Seahawks last year, said he's received no offers from other NFL teams.

"Nothing as of right now," Owens said. "So I understand the process. Obviously teams are really taking a closer look in evaluating their younger players."

"Being a free agent, I understand that later in the months as training camp starts, they'll start looking for veterans," he said.

Owens blamed "politics" for NFL teams' reluctance to sign him.

I think a lot of it has to do with my reputation, things that I've done early in my career. I'm a changed person. I'm a bit more mature than I was in years past and I think if anybody out there can look past that, and look what I can bring to the team than some of the things that happened in the past, I can look past it and maybe they could and I could go in and help a team develop some of those younger guys.

If no prospects come calling this year, Owens told CBSSports.com last week that he would "be realistic" and retire.

"I want to play again," he said. "I want to go out on top with a team. I think I can still play, but if I don't sign with a team, it would be time to retire. I have to be honest with myself."
