Edmonton Oilers extend Kris Russell's contract

The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Kris Russell to a four-year contract extension on Friday.

Financial details were not released by the team, but TSN reported the deal is worth $16 million and contains a modified no-trade clause.

"I love playing there," Russell said. "The guys in the room are great and I'm excited to get it done. It's a place I want to be."

Russell, 30, appeared in 68 games with the Oilers last season, posting one goal, 12 assists and 23 penalty minutes. He led the NHL with 213 blocked shots and also recorded 67 hits. He averaged 21:13 minutes of ice time per game, ranking third on the team.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Russell led the league in blocked shots two of the past three seasons and finished second in the NHL in 2015-16. He also led the league with 283 blocked shots in 2014-15. On March 6, 2015, Russell set an NHL record with 15 blocked shots in one game against the Boston Bruins.

The Caroline, Alberta, native owns 190 points (39 goals, 151 assists) and 210 penalty minutes in 641 career NHL games.

Russell represented Canada on five occasions, winning gold twice at the World Junior Hockey Championship (2006, 2007).
