Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor may have a date for their highly anticipated fight.

The boxing champion and UFC standout could meet Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, according to a ESPN report on Monday.

Mayweather's promoters are expected to ask the Nevada State Boxing Commission to reserve the date. The bout likely would be held at T-Mobile Arena or MGM Grand Arena and broadcast by Showtime.

Mayweather would be ending a 23-month retirement to take on McGregor, a two-division UFC champion, for the "only fight that makes sense" to the boxer to make a comeback.

The fight is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster. WME-IMG, the UFC's ownership group, and Mayweather adviser Al Haymon were reported to be discussing the details of the deal.

"There are negotiations ongoing, but none of us wants to turn this into the circus that the Mayweather-(Manny) Pacquiao negotiations were, so I think it's best if we keep all the business discussions private until the deal is done," Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza told ESPN on Monday night.

A Sept. 16 matchup had been a possibility for Mayweather-McGregor, but that date is now taken by a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin middleweight world championship fight at T-Mobile Arena.

The 40-year-old Mayweather has a 49-0 career record with 26 knockouts. His last fight was against Andre Berto in September 2015 to defend his welterweight world title. He retired after that bout.

The 28-year-old McGregor is seeking a boxing license in Nevada to take on Mayweather.
