Manchester United, City extend condolences after concert attack

Manchester United and Manchester City extended condolences to their city after a suicide bombing at Manchester Arena killed 22 people and left 59 injured following an Ariana Grande concert on Monday night.

United wrote on its Twitter account, "We are deeply shocked by last night's terrible events at the Manchester Arena. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected."

Meanwhile, City tweeted, "It's with great sadness we hear of the terrible events at the Arena. Our hearts go out to all affected and to our city's emergency services."

Players from both sides and the soccer community at large also shared their support on Twitter.

"Absolutely shocked to hear the news this morning. Thoughts with all that lost loved ones (and) prayers for those being treated in hospitals," United winger Ashley Young wrote.

City captain and defender Vincent Kompany wrote, "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims. It's a sad day for the great city of Manchester. #Unity"

United States Women's National Team star midfielder Carli Lloyd is playing with Manchester City on a short-term contract and was in the vicinity of the attack.

"Sickened by what has happened in Manchester. Thoughts go out to everyone. This is literally right around the corner from me. I am safe," Lloyd tweeted.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) said in a statement that it does not know of any specific plots to attack the UEFA Europa League Final between United and AFC Ajax on Wednesday at Friends Arena in Solna, a municipality near the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

"Due to the tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium," part of the statement read.
