Because he didn't have media availability in Week 6 and then spent just 90 seconds with reporters after the Panthers' loss to the Saints, quarterback Cam Newton had not addressed his first documented his concussion until Wednesday.

The reigning NFL MVP missed Week 5 after taking a legal helmet-to-helmet hit from Atlanta linebacker Deion Jones on a two-point conversion run a week earlier.

"I've been taking hits since I've been playing this game, since I was 7 years old," Newton said. "I've had my bell rung numerous times and even been hit hard, but that was the only time that I can really say that I had a concussion.

"Part of me is happy for it, just to know and go through it and to show so many people that this is a real issue and this is a real problem. And part of me is like, 'That could have been preventable. Just run through the damn end zone, Cam, and everything will be all right. But after talking to [my mother], that won't happen again."
