EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The latest installment of the Geno Smith Era might have only lasted four series for the New York Jets.

Making his first start of the season for the Jets, Smith left Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens after sustaining a knee injury while being sacked in the second quarter at MetLife Stadium.

Smith, who was 4 of 8 for 95 yards and a touchdown, was taken down by Matthew Judon for an 8-yard loss on third-and-6 play. He was seen pointing to his knee upon reaching the sideline and soon headed for the locker room. Smith returned in street clothes in the second half and was ruled out for the contest.

Enter Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was benched for Smith after throwing two touchdowns and 10 interceptions during the Jets' four-game losing streak. He directed an 85-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 13-yard scoring strike to Matt Forte.

Smith, a 2013 second-round pick, started all 16 games as a rookie and the first eight contests of the 2014 season before he was benched for Michael Vick. Three games later, Smith returned to the lineup and remained the starter the rest of the season.

He was penciled in as the starter last summer under first-year head coach Todd Bowles but lost his job after sustaining a broken jaw in a locker room altercation with ex-teammate IK Enemkpali. Fitzpatrick threw for a franchise-record 31 touchdown passes while leading the Jets to a 10-6 record.

Center Nick Mangold suffered a right ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game.

Mangold, an 11-year veteran who is the longest-tenured Jets player, was injured on a 5-yard run by Forte with 7:46 remaining in the quarter. Mangold remained prone on the field for a couple of minutes before walking off slowly and with an obvious limp. He headed straight to the locker room and was announced as questionable to return by the Jets.

Mangold was listed as questionable on the injury report on Friday due to a knee injury he suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 9. He has missed just four games since the Jets selected him in the first round of the 2006 draft but has battled neck, hand and ankle injuries the last two-plus seasons.
