Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has swelling in his surgically repaired right knee, putting his availability in question for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Charles was limited in Friday's practice, five days after seeing his most substantial action of the season in Sunday's 26-10 win at Oakland.

"Jamaal's knee had a little bit of swelling in it (on Thursday) and we were just taking it down for today," Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday. "We think everything will be alright as we go."

Charles, 29, did not make his season debut until Week 4 at Pittsburgh, carrying twice for seven yards. Following Kansas City's bye week, Charles ran for 33 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and added a pair of receptions versus the Raiders.

Spencer Ware has carried the bulk of the rushing load in Charles' absence, rumbling for 131 yards and a touchdown last week. Ware leads the team with 415 rushing yards and is averaging a robust 5.3 yards per tote.

Chiefs cornerback Phillip Gaines also was limited in Friday's practice due to swelling in his knee and also was listed as questionable.

Gaines was injured in Sunday's matchup against Oakland. A third-round pick out of Rice in 2014, Gaines has 18 tackles in four games this season.
