Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado lands three-year, $40M extension

Miami Marlins veteran third baseman Martin Prado agreed to terms on a three-year, $40 million contract extension, the Miami Herald reported on Tuesday.

The deal will extend through the 2019 season for Prado, who was eligible for free agency at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign. The move will weaken a free-agent market for third basemen that includes Justin Turner (Los Angeles Dodgers), Luis Valbuena (Houston Astros) and Aaron Hill (Boston Red Sox).

Prado is batting .305 with seven homers and 73 RBIs this season, his second in Miami after being acquired from the New York Yankees along with right-hander David Phelps in exchange for right-handers Nathan Eovaldi and Domingo German and outfielder/first baseman Garrett Jones.

The 32-year-old Venezuelan is batting .293 with 94 homers and 562 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Yankees and Marlins.
