Jose Fernandez purportedly engaged in an argument with his girlfriend and was seen at a Miami River bar hours before the fatal boat crash that killed the 24-year-old Miami Marlins pitcher and two others, the Miami Herald reported Monday.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, which is investigating the crash, also confirmed that Fernandez was the owner of the boat -- a 32-foot SeeVee vessel named "Kaught Looking" -- after initially stating it was owned by a friend of Fernandez.

The bodies of Fernandez, 27-year-old Emilio Jesus Macias and 25-year-old Eduardo Rivero were found early Sunday morning after the boat slammed into jetty rocks in Miami's deepwater channel.

Officials do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. Toxicology results have not been released.

A spokesperson for the American Social Bar & Kitchen acknowledged that Fernandez attended the establishment, likely after midnight.

Will Bernal, a friend of Rivero's, declined to join the three men on the boat and said that Fernandez was stressed out by the argument with his girlfriend.

"I was trying everything in my power to try to convince him (Rivero) to not go out on the boat, and Jose too," Bernal told the Herald.

The Marlins canceled Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves and honored Fernandez with various tributes throughout Monday's game against the New York Mets, including having every player wear Fernandez's No. 16 jersey.
