Former Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy was arrested Sunday in Richardson, Texas, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

According to Richardson police, Hardy was stopped for a traffic violation, then was arrested when he was found to have 0.7 grams of cocaine in a wallet in the car, NBCDFW.com reported.

The officer who pulled over Hardy asked for permission to search the car and received it, according to the police report.

The officer wrote that Hardy "did not know what the substance was (in the wallet) and that he believed he got it while he was at a party the night previous. ... (He said) he passed his wallet around at the party because he was paying for everybody, and that must have been when the baggies were put in his wallet."

Hardy was released Monday afternoon from Richardson City Jail on $5,000 bond.

Hardy, 28, is a free agent after appearing in 12 games for the Cowboys last year and registering 35 tackles, six sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

A sixth-round pick by the Panthers in 2010 out of Mississippi, Hardy became a star in Carolina before a 2014 arrest on an alleged assault on a former girlfriend.

He was convicted of domestic violence in a bench trial. Upon appeal, the conviction was overturned because the victim did not cooperate with authorities.

Hardy spent most of the 2014 season on the commissioner's exempt list before the charges were formally dropped. He signed a one-year, $11.3 million deal with the Cowboys before the 2015 season.

Earlier this year, Hardy's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, reportedly told all NFL teams that his client underwent behavioral therapy to deal with anger management, temper management and domestic violence.
