It's the first ever UFC event in New York, which lifted a ban on mixed martial arts after the sport worked almost 10 years to legalize it.

McGregor (20-3) won his last fight, a rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202, which was contested at welterweight.

Alvarez (28-4) defeated Gilbert Melendez and former UFC and WEC champ Anthony Pettis before knocking out Rafeal dos Anjos in the opening round of their July 7 fight in Las Vegas to claim the lightweight belt.

The bout with McGregor allowed Alvarez to leapfrog Khabib Nurmagomedov (23-0), who had a signed bout agreement for UFC 205.
