New York Giants running back Shane Vereen is out for the season with a torn triceps.

Vereen started Sunday with Rashad Jennings (hand) inactive and rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown.

The injury could push Orleans Darkwa into a starting role Week 4, when the Giants play at Minnesota on "Monday Night Football.

Darkwa, 24, was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2014. After four games, he was released and joined the Giants. He had 10 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Redskins.

Depending on Jennings' status -- he said late last week he expected to play Week 3 -- the Giants could consider a free agent. C.J. Spiller, released by the New Orleans Saints, could be one option as the Giants seek to fill some of the third-down duties Vereen handled.
