CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton went out of Sunday's game for a play after receiving brief medical attention on the field.

The NFL's reigning Most Valuable Player appeared to be favoring his left foot. Derek Anderson filled in for one play before Newton returned and completed a third-down pass, though the Panthers were forced to punt.
