Landon Donovan set to return to MLS

American soccer star Landon Donovan is on the verge of resuming his playing career after a nearly two-year hiatus.

The 34-year-old Donovan is engaged in talks to rejoin the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, multiple outlets reported on Thursday.

Donovan retired from the Galaxy following the 2014 season. He hasn't played competitively since that season.

The Galaxy have until Sept. 15 to submit their final roster for the remainder of the MLS season.

Donovan is the all-time leader in MLS history in goals (144) and assists (136). He won six league championships -- four with the Galaxy and two with the San Jose Earthquakes.

After he retired, the MLS changed the name of its MVP award to the Landon Donovan MVP Award.

Donovan also is a former standout with the U.S. men's national team. He played on three World Cup teams and is the program's all-time leading goal scorer with 57.
