Ryan Lochte received a 10-month suspension and also will miss the swimming world championships next summer, multiple media outlets reported.

The ban is related to an incident at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics last month. Lochte, an American swimmer with 12 Olympic medals, initially claimed that he was robbed at gunpoint, then later admitted that most of his story was fabricated.

Lochte, accompanied by three of his U.S. swimming teammates, was later accused of vandalism outside of the gas station, and an armed security guard reportedly told them to pay for the damages.

The entire situation, particularly Lochte's false account, created embarrassing international incident. As a result, Lochte's suspension was jointly issued by the International Olympic Committee, the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming, according to USA Today's Christine Brennan.

Brennan reported that the ban runs through June 30, but that Lochte also won't be allowed to compete in the world championships next July in Budapest, Hungary.

Lochte, 32, still faces charges in Brazil for a false report of a crime.

He won only one medal in Rio, as part of the championship 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

Lochte captured two golds, two silvers and a bronze at London in 2012; two golds and two bronzes at Beijing in 2008; and a gold and a silver at Athens in 2004.
