The San Francisco 49ers reduced their roster to 75 players on Tuesday by placing wide receiver Bruce Ellington on the injured reserve list and releasing linebacker Jason Fanaika.

Fanaika signed with San Francisco as an undrafted rookie out of the University of Utah in May. The 24-year-old recorded 88 tackles and nine sacks in 26 games over two seasons with the Utes.

Ellington, who has been plagued by a hamstring injury, has reeled in 19 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons with the 49ers. The 25-year-old added seven carries for 35 yards and one score.

Ellington has also played a significant role on special teams, posting a 7.7-yard average return on punts and a 25.6-yard average on kickoffs.
