The Pittsburgh Pirates placed ace Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-hander Steven Brault from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Monday's road game against the Chicago Cubs.

Cole, who owns a 7-9 mark with a 3.55 ERA this season, is being plagued by posterior inflammation of the right elbow. The trip to the disabled list was made retroactive to Aug. 25.
