Carlos Gomez designated for assignment by Houston Astros

Outfielder Carlos Gomez, who was an All-Star in 2013 and 2014, was designated for assignment by the Houston Astros on Wednesday.

Gomez hit .284 with 24 homers in 2014 for the Milwaukee Brewers. The 30-year-old was acquired by Houston at the trade deadline last season, and finished the 2015 campaign hitting .255 with 12 homers for the two teams combined.

This season, however, Gomez is hitting just .210 with five homers and 29 RBIs in 85 games.

"It's not a secret that I'm not doing my job," Gomez told MLB.com, "and I am really disappointed in myself."

The Astros have 10 days to either trade Gomez, assign him to the minor leagues or release him. Gomez also can be claimed by another team off irrevocable outright waivers.

"This has nothing to do with Carlos' effort," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters. "Carlos has put in 100 percent. We all see how much he enjoys playing the game and how much he cares about what happens. It's one of those situations where, for whatever reason, it didn't work out here in the way he wanted to and the way we wanted to."

Gomez is in the last season of a three-year, $24 million contract that pays him $9 million in 2016.
