ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Don't look now but Detroit Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy is dealing with another injury.

Levy played just 17 defensive snaps last year because of a preseason hip injury that eventually required surgery, and after taking part in OTAs and minicamp this spring, the Lions placed him on the non-football injury list at the start of camp.

Neither Levy nor Lions head coach Jim Caldwell would shed any light on how bad Levy's latest injury is, and Caldwell insisted the team is just being cautious with its star linebacker.

"We just kind of want to be careful with him and just make certain he's ready to go," Caldwell said. "We anticipate he will be at some point in time. So if it was something long term that we deemed as being long term you certainly know that I would let you know that, but at this point in time we want to be a little bit prudent in terms of how we deal with it."

The Lions gave Levy a four-year extension last August a few weeks before he came up lame at a mid-week practice, and their defense never recovered from his loss.

Levy played at a Pro-Bowl level in 2013-14. He's a force against the run and athletic enough to cover tight ends downfield.

The Lions need him healthy this fall playing at a high level with Ansah, Slay, Glover Quin and Haloti Ngata if they're going to contend for the NFC North title.
