Mirim Lee opens with 62, leads Women's British Open

By The Sports Xchange

Mirim Lee came out firing in another major with a 10-under 62 to grab the opening-round lead at the Women's British Open on Thursday.

Lee, 25, who led the U.S. Open at 8-under after the first round earlier this month in California, birdied the opening hole and nine more at Milton Keynes, England. Lee carded a par on the par-4 18th with a chance to finish at 61.

"When you normally think of British Open, you think of high roughs, difficult roughs," said Lee, who missed the British Open last year with a thumb injury. "But here it feels more like California, so I think that really made me feel comfortable."

Lee tied the British Open record set by Minea Blomqvist, who shot 62 in the third round in 2004.

Lee is looking for her first victory this season and feels as if a corner was turned after only one top-10 finish in her first 10 events this season.

"I think the difference is that now I'm trying to have fun," she said.

Ariya Jutanugarn, who is sixth in the Rolex Rankings and has eight top-10 finishes this season, ended Thursday three shots back with a 65 and stands at 7-under.

Shanshan Feng has sole possession of third place at 6-under; American Stacy Lewis, who won the event in 2013, and Mi Hyang Lee are 5-under and share fourth place.
