Tipton, 26, was shot in the abdomen when a gun discharged. He was transported to a hospital before dying from the injuries.

According to Roseville police chief James Berlin, Tipton took his Jeep in for service at a Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM dealership. Tipton was placing personal belongings into a bag when one of two handguns inside the bag discharged.

"It is not clear at this time why the subject felt it necessary to be in possession of two handguns," Berlin said in the statement.

Berlin said both guns in the bag were registered to Tipton, who had a concealed pistol license.

Tipton played in six games for the Colts in 2014 and 10 in 2015. He carried the ball 15 times for 38 yards and caught 11 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown.

Indianapolis waived Tipton in late December. A few days later, he was arrested for firing a semi-automatic rifle in a residential neighborhood.

Prosecutors declined to file charges in that incident.

Tipton played college football at Central Michigan.
