Tony Hawk completes 900 at 48 years old

By Alex Butler

LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- Bloodied shins and scraped ankles were signs of glory for Tony Hawk this week.

The skateboarding legend posted a video Monday on social media of himself landing a 900. The trick consists of two 360-degree turns and then a half turn.

But Hawk's masterpiece wasn't nailed on the first try. The trick was emblematic of his lengthy career. Hawk consistently fell while performing the trick but got up each time, a little slower, a little more determined.

"Here is a 900 at age 48 (exactly 17 years after my first), just to see if I could still do it. Sincere thanks to Nixon & MINI for believing in this aging skateboarder for so many years. And thanks to all of you for allowing me to live this dream much longer than I ever imagined."

Hawk also posted photos of his injuries.

"These aren't terrible, but I am wearing them with pride after what happened today (video to follow). Thanks to everyone for all the years of support. It's unbelievable that I still get to skate for a living," Hawk said.

Hawk landed his 900 in the 1999 X Games Vert Best Trick competition in San Francisco. Hawk, then 32, landed the trick on his eighth attempt.
