Philadelphia pitching prospect, left-hander Matt Imhof, has suffered a career-threatening eye injury.

Imhof, the team's second-round pick in the 2014 draft, has undergone surgery for what's been described as a "significant" eye injury.

According to ESPN, the 22-year-old was taking part in a routine stretching regimen after a game at Brevard County when a piece of equipment malfunctioned and he was struck in the right eye.

Imhof likely will need further procedures, the source said.

The Phillies signed Imhof -- 47th pick in the 2014 year's draft -- to a $1.2 million deal.

He went 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA last season with Advanced 'A' Clearwater. This season, he was pitching out of the bullpen and had posted a 4.33 ERA.
