VIDEO: Umpire exits after hit in head with bat

By The Sports Xchange

Home-plate umpire Paul Emmel was struck in the head by the bat of Los Angeles Angels pinch hitter Jefry Marte during the ninth inning of the Oakland Athletics' 5-4 victory in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday.

Marte lost control of his bat on the first pitch he saw from Oakland reliever Sean Doolittle, and it hit Emmel, who was bleeding profusely before both teams' trainers rushed out to treat him. Emmel walked off the field under his own power with the trainers.

After a delay of several minutes, third base umpire Quinn Wolcott replaced Emmel. Marte popped out to second on the next pitch to end the game.

Emmel went to the hospital to receive stitches.
