LONDON, June 24 (UPI) -- Winners at Wimbledon this year will grab a paycheck worth more than any other champion has gotten -- a cool £2 million.

The prize money at the world's premier tennis tournament increases each year, but 2016 is the first time it will ever crack the £2 million mark -- equivalent to $2.73 million.

The runners-up, both men and women, will receive £1 million.

In 2015, winners received £1,890,000 and second-place paid £940,000. Just six years ago, in 2010, the amount given to each champion was just £1 million.

The tournament begins Monday at London's All-England Lawn and Tennis Club.
