OAKMONT, Pa. -- It's going to be a long weekend at the U.S. Open.

The first round of the year's second major championship was suspended because of severe weather Thursday after three rain delays. Only nine of 156 players in the field completed 18 holes.

Leader Andrew Landry wasn't one of the finishers. The 28-year-old from Austin, Texas, was at 3 under par through 17 holes.

Starting on the back nine, Landry played his first 15 holes in 5 under before making consecutive bogeys on the par-4 seventh hole and par-3 eighth after the second rain delay of the round.

Shortly after the third delay, play was called for the day. Just seven players are under par, with Bubba Watson and Danny Lee at 2 under. Watson is through 14 holes and Lee has played 13.

The best score among the few players who finished the first round belongs to amateur Scottie Scheffler, who posted a 1-under 69.

As promised, Oakmont proved to be a supreme challenge before play was called. The combined score of players on the course is 275 over par.

None of the afternoon wave -- a total of 78 players -- started the first round. That group includes world No. 1 Jason Day, Phil Mickleson and Adam Scott.
