Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who was scratched with a sore left foot Sunday, returned to the starting lineup against the Baltimore Orioles on Memorial Day.

The Red Sox slugger had six home runs in his previous nine games in Baltimore at Camden Yards. In the eighth inning, Ortiz belted his 14th home run of the season off rookie lefty Ashur Tolliver to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Boston went on to win, 7-2.

"He's good to go (Monday)," manager John Farrell said before the game.

Ortiz was hit in the foot on a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman on Saturday. X-rays came back negative.

According to Farrell, Ortiz fouled a pitch off the same spot on his left foot last week and the incident Saturday made the injury worse.

The 40-year-old Ortiz is off to the best start of his career in what he has announced will be his final season. He entered Monday's game with a .339 average and 13 homers and 46 RBIs.
