Britain's Chris Wood captured the biggest victory of his career at the BMW Championship in Virginia Water, England on Sunday, earning a $926,079 paycheck.

Wood shot a three-under round of 69 on Sunday to claim a one-shot victory, and finished at 9-under in the European Tour's biggest tournament.

Sweden's Rikard Karlberg, who had a hole-in-one en route to the low score of the day at 65, finished at 8-under. Masters champion Danny Willett was another shot back at 8-under.

Wood shot a 29 on the front nine Sunday while overnight leader Scott Hend faded, but then needed to overcome a string of his own bogeys on the back nine. Wood held a four-shot lead after a birdie on the 11th hole, but the margin was trimmed to one entering the final hole following three bogeys in a four-hole stretch.

He played the par-5 18th conservatively and his par was enough to capture his first title since winning in Australia last year. Wood also won in Qatar in 2013.

"Such a relief," Wood told reporters after Sunday's round.

With a victory, the 54th-ranked Wood secured his card on the European Tour through 2021 and a three-year exemption into the British Open.
