Carpenter, 30, is batting .250 with nine home runs, 11 doubles and 32 RBIs in 46 games.

To make room for Carpenter on the 25-man active roster, the Cardinals designated shortstop Ruben Tejada for assignment.

The 26-year-old Tejada is hitting just .176 with three RBIs in 34 at-bats. He was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent on March 19 following his release by the New York Mets.
